The picture above is the view from my pool chair. What looks like a bird cage is actually a shower for rinsing off the sand from the beach! Very nice actually, and they are scattered all along the beach front. Today was Gunilla's last full day so we really just relaxed by the pool. A little overcast today, but warm and very pleasant. Daily interaction with the elephants of course.

Day 11 - Phuket Town

When we had had enough of shopping we found a nice bar and had some beer (even I had a beer!) There was a cab driver who had been following us for quite some time and whenever we saw him we just said "not yet". He did not give up and eventually after almost 2 hours at the bar, we found him parked nearby so we agreed to take his cab back to the hotel. He was a very interesting young man who knew a lot about America and american history. That was not expected. We gave him a good tip and he was really happy!

In Phuket I made an observation that there were quite a few rather large (chubby to fat) locals which I have never seen before. However, I soon figured out why. Right across the street from the bar where we sat there was a McDonald's and a Kentucky Fried Chicken! No wonder! It is too bad though. I have heard from friends that the same thing is happening in Japan. This is an export we really should not have!

Day 10 - Full Day Tour of Phuket Island
Today we had booked a private tour of Phuket island. We had a very knowledgeable guide who taught us quite a bit. Thailand was previously known as Siam and the country changed names several times. The word Siam means brown and the word Thailand stands for freedom. In 1939 the name was changed from Siam to Thailand, but in 1945 it was changed back to Siam. In 1949 it was once again changed back to Thailand. When the country was called Siam the flag was red with a white elephant and now when it is Thailand the flag is striped with a red, a blue and a white stripe. The king of Thailand is the longest reigning monarch in the world. He became king at the age of 19 and has now been on the throne for 66 years.

I have posted videos of Linda and of the fighting fish on YouTube.

Day 9 - Marriott Phuket Beach Club
Saturday - another lazy day by the pool. Today we stayed by the big pool that has elephants spraying water. These elephants are of course not the live ones, but made of clay. The pool is beautiful as everything else here at the resort. When I get back I will post more pictures from the hotel and the resort. Tonkow came by at lunch time, and as we do every day, we bought bananas for her. Every day before she wanted her bananas peeled, but today for some reason she wanted them with the peel on! If she was given a "naked" banana she took it with her trunk but then tossed it to the ground and even stepped on them! I suppose a girl has the right to change her mind - variety is the spice of life and obviously even elephants learn this early. When she had had her fill of bananas it was time for her swim in the ocean.
I haven't mentioned before that when you are by the pool there are some very nice little surprises. Every now and then the staff comes by with ice cold wet wash cloths scented with lemongrass. It is a lovely smell and that cold towel feels like heaven on a hot day! They are also presented very nicely rolled to look like a lotus blossom. Your glass is continuously filled with ice water and during the day you are offered (at no extra cost), little drinks like pina colada and other exotic fruit drinks (all ice cold of course), little baskets with freshly cut tropical fruits and even some little tidbits from the restaurants on the premises. In other words, we really are in the lap of luxury!
When we had had enough of the pool it was already after 5 pm so we decided to go up to the lobby and once again watch the sunset dance at the infinity pool while having a large glass of pomelo juice. If you ever have a chance - try it! It is soo good!
From the lobby infinity pool we continued to Happy Hour at the blue pool where there is a guy singing and playing the guitar really well. He mixes new and old tunes and the guests often join in. Here we were also treated to a nice sunset. I have posted the last song and the sunset on http://www.youtube.com/maggsimm tonight. By this time we were really in need of a shower so we returned to our apartment, showered and changed and went to dinner at La Cuicina, an Italian restaurant here at the resort. We all enjoyed our meals!
Tomorrow we're out on new adventures!

Day 8 - Andaman Sea Kayak trip
Today we spent our day in Phang Nga and Andaman Sea. This is probably my favorite trip while visiting out here. Today was my 4th time with this company. We were picked up at the hotel by a minibus at 10 am. It was probably a half hour ride to the pier where our boat was. We basically drove across the island to the other side, so it was not very far. We travelled on the boat for maybe an hour and could see the fascinating limestone rock formations. It is very beautiful and when you get up close you see lots of colors and the formations of the limestone hanging down are magnificent.
Today we could not start with the kayaking because the tide was coming up and if we had entered the "hong" (which is like a room inside a limestone mountain) we would not be able to get out again for 6 hours because the tunnels would be filled with water. So instead we went to a small beach for maybe an hour. It was time for some swimming and a drink. Even I had a Pina Colada!

Back to the boat for a delicious lunch and then we took off for the kayaking. 2 persons + a paddler in each kayak. You do not have to paddle yourself.
First we went into a rather small hong and the tunnel was quite roomy. You could actually sit up in the kayak. In here we found a lot of little monkeys. They were not afraid at all. I guess they see so many tourists coming in these kayaks that they believe it is part of nature!
The next hong we were going to enter was the challenging one. It was literally no headroom so you have to lie flat on your back in the kayak. It is pitch black in the tunnel and there are hundreds, maybe even thousands, of bats hanging above you. And they stink! The paddler has a headlamp and shines his light on the bats. Not really for the squeamish people! In this hong there are trees growing in the water and they look interesting with their big root systems. Here you can also see the strange walking fish.
After maybe another half hour of kayaking we once again borded the boat and started the trip back. We saw another lovely sunset and by the time we made landfall it was dark. We were not back at the hotel until 7.30 pm.
I have tried to add videos here in the blog, but it seems to take forever and ultimaltely it fails to upload. Therefore I have now started my own channel on YouTube where I will post my videos. I will put some there now from this trip and probably add more later when I get back to the US.
The URL is http://www.youtube.com/maggsimm The long ones take a while to download, especially the sunset dance by the infinitypool.

Day 7 - Phuket
Today there was a lot of interaction with the 2 elephants at the resort. First we had Tonkow coming by for her daily interaction with the guests and to be fed bananas. She is too cute to be true. She had just had her swim i the ocean and was just about to be rinsed off with fresh water.
I tried to upload a video of the baby elephant's shower here, but it failed. I will try some other time though.
Later on the bigger elephant, Jumbo, came and it was time for his bath. But first he needed to sell some bananas and cucumbers so that he could have a snack and also make some money. Today it was Kim's day to ride him. First just for a while while he still was wearing his "coat". When it was time for the bath she was allowed to ride him down to the beach in out into the ocean. At first it was just Kim and Gunilla swimming with Jumbo, but more people joined in later. All were having a great time and I got some really good movies of it as well.
